Glucosamine and Chondroitin Side Effects

Filed under: Nutrition Center, World Of Health, Be Fit Now @ 5:45 am

The side effects of glucosamine and chondroitin (G/CS) have been found to be of a not-serious nature by the following 5 scientific studies.

My interest in the side effects of this supplement stems from the fact that I have been getting great results from taking it for going on 3 years now (June 2007). Read more details at CosaminDS.

Numerous studies that say pretty much the same thing about side effects, I am referencing 5 of the larger ones.

1 - GAIT is a $12.5 million study by the National Institutes of Health. The full name is the Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial

They noted no serious side effects from the formula used in the study.

Adverse events were found to be generally mild and evenly distributed among the study groups.

2 - A single formula of G/CS, used for managing osteoarthritis of the knees, was studied by the Osteoarthritis Research Society International .

Adverse events were equally reported by participants whether they received the glucosamine and chondroitin or the placebo. Those adverse events included indigestion, gas, constipation, bad taste and fatigue.

3 - Since glucosamine is kind of a cross between a protein and a sugar, it was tested for its effect on blood sugar control in people who have diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) studied this matter and found that typical doses of glucosamine do not impact blood sugar levels in diabetics.

4 - A study of FCHG49 Glucosamine HCL in 2003 found no effect on blood glucose control in those with Type II Diabetes Mellitus.

5 - In 2003, research that looked at numerous glucosamine and chondroitin assessments performed from 1980 to 2002 revealed that safety was excellent for taking both compounds.

In summary, these are 5 studies of glucosamine and chondroitin where:

* Serious side effects did not occur.
* Adverse reactions were not found
* Blood sugar control was not effected in participants with diabetes.
* Study participants who received a placebo were just a likelly to report unpleasant effects as those who received the glucosamine and chondroitin.
