Well known hobo Travelin’ Jack Steinway died last night in Arizona. He was 76.

Although not traditionally the glitziest profession, Jack was truly one of the leading lights of vagrancy throughout his long career. Perhaps he is best known for his unusual choice of instrument. Whilst many favour the harmonica or occasionally the guitar, Jack was known to travel most of his life with an elegant Grand Piano on his back, which at times led to much playful ribbing on the part of his contemporaries.

Born in Tennessee to his own parents, Steinway and his family were often forced to, in his own words, “bend over backwards to make ends meet.” Whether this referred to literally making their feet touch their heads like a human donut, or to a more metaphorical monetary goal was never made clear, but one thing was certain: Bending over backwards was a poor way to earn a living. Jack and his family would often stand on street corners for hours, flexing and contorting for all they were worth, only to walk away with a few meagre pennies from disinterested passers by.

At the age of fourteen, increasingly disillusioned by the family trade (few people, if any, wanted to trade families with the failed junior contortionist), Jack struck out on his own and took a job as a bar tender in a strip club. Due to his wandering eyes and resultant shaky hands, Jack was soon fired due to spilling more alcohol than he poured, but not before he learned rudimentary piano from the jazz pianist who often accompanied the acts, “Keys” Lockwell.

Unfortunately, bad luck seemed to follow Steinway around, and as a result of a largely semi-literate public, Lockwell himself was soon fired from his post as people were uncomfortable with the sound of a strip club that offered “girls with a pianist.”

Down on their luck, Lockwell and Steinway made a daring midnight raid on the club and came away with a piano and some rather fetching feathered boas, a species of snake now long extinct.

Having sold the boas to the local zoo, Jack and Keys decided to ride the rails to California in the hopes of better luck. As the junior member of the duo, Jack was given the job of carrying the concert grand piano that they had stolen the previous night. He would later recall, with his astute sense of description, that it was “god-damned heavy.”

However, carrying the piano had an unexpected bonus; having spent years walking at an un-naturally reclined angle due to his mis-spent childhood, stooping under three tons of excess weight soon resulted in a miraculous posture correction.

By the time they reached California, Steinway was well on his way to becoming an accomplished pianist, but Lockwell had loftier ambitions and tempers began to fray. After an altercation over a woman, the two parted ways, vowing never to speak again. Lockwell apparently committed suicide that night by dropping a piano on himself, although police were always suspicious of this explanation and many questions were left unanswered.

Without the guiding influence of Lockwell, Jack soon went off the rails. Also, “Keys” Lockwell had possessed far greater financial acumen than Steinway, who was at once foolish with money and also phenomenally unlucky. On August 5th, 1945, he invested the few savings he had mustered in a fledgling Japanese electronics company based in Hiroshima. A shrewd move, but one which backfired spectacularly with the bombing of the city into atomic dust the day afterwards.

Finally deciding that he had been happiest when riding the rails, Steinway set off on a permanent career in hoboism. Despite the urgings of his contemporaries, he point-blank refused to learn a more portable instrument and obstinately carried his piano around the American South West well into his advanced years.

Indeed, the legend of Travelin’ Jack Steinway was always just big enough that he could show up in a town and trade off of it in order to bum a drink, or a smoke, or, on several occasions, a complete spine transplant to replace his ludicrously compacted vertebrae.

Still, age and injury could not crush his spirit. When Hobo Monthly caught up with him last year, his trademarked wit was on show for all to see as he curtly remarked “What the f*ck do you want?!” before beating our reporter soundly about the head and neck with a bottle of Jack Daniels.

With his passing, the great American road loses one of it’s most colourful figures. Long may he be remembered.

Here are my tips for a great photo:
Stay Still-Don’t move a bit when you are snapping the picture. Even a little movement will usually make the picture not as sharp. It’s a good ideal not to breathe when you are taking a picture. Of course, don’t do this longer than 5 seconds. And only do this if you don’t have a medical condition that five seconds of not breathing would hurt you.
If you are near a tree or a side of a building. Lean on the item while you take the picture. You’ll be amazed how sharp the picture is, providing other things are done correctly, when you are still when you shoot!

Take Photo-9a.m. to 3 p.m.-If you take your picture during these hours, the color is usually better. That is because the color of light at sunrise and sunset tends to have more red in it. Now, if you want your subject to have a more than normal red face. Go ahead and photograph him or her at 630 p.m.

Take Photo with sun behind you-Pictures work on something called reflected light. If the sun is behind you, it will hit your subject and bounce into your camera, even without any noise.Of course, if you want a red, artsy picture-go ahead and shoot toward the sun. When you do this people usually come out too dark. But, like I say, that may be your style.

Follow moving things-Like, your buddies are playing b-ball and you want a picture of them playing. Don’t hold your camera still for a picture this time. As dude number one brings the ball to the net, follow him through the viewer in the camera, try to keep him in about the same spot in the viewer all the time. Try snapping the picture as he does a hoop. A lot of times you get a real clear, focused picture of the shooter and a blur of the ball. But sometimes that’s cool!

If you want stuff blurred, then don’t follow them with the camera. Like you want a picture of the freeway but the want the traffic blurred. Try taking the picture with the traffic going left to right or right to left with maybe a bridge in the photo. This occasionally works.

Photos inside with flash-Hold still, try to get the subject to look away a little bit from the camera. Sometimes if they look right into the camera you get something called red-eye.

The throw-away camera can take excellent photos with flash of two or three people. Remember to hold the camera still during taking the picture.

Don’t try to use the flash in a large area. Like 5,000 people photo of a night rock concert. If you want to take a picture of something going on on a stage, I recommend a more complex camera.

Have fun with you disposable camera and remember to ask permission from people before you photograph them; make sure you do not violate their privacy, or in any way be disrespectful of people or places.

..I have loved collecting. The real apistogramma’s come from southern America, they all have the same characteristics, like a complex breeding behavior, as their large relatives, only their size is different. Besides the apistogramma group there are also some relatively popular dwarf cichlids from Africa, like the Pelvicachromis group. From this group the most widespread cichlid is the Pelvicachromis pulcher, also known as the Kribensis or Purple cichlid.

Generally the cichlids from the apistogramma group are more fragile and harder to maintain, and breed, for a longer period of time. In my opinion apistogramma’s are not real beginner species. They are more likely to get diseases if not all the environmental variables are properly taken care of. They need soft and acidic water with a low PH value, a PH of 5.5 to 6 is preferable. They hardly eat dry foods, best is to feed them live foods or frozen food, like bloodworms, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae. Apistogramma species can be kept in a large tropical community aquarium, but be sure the other fish are not too small, they can defend their territory very fiercely, and can be quite aggressive when they are breeding. In my opinion it is best to keep the apistogramma’s on their own, in a larger aquarium you could combine two apistogramma variants together, maybe supplemented with a small group of other fish, like some livebearers or betta’s. They also can be kept together with discus or angel fish. I always have a harem of apisto’s in my discus tanks, just to populate the lower areas of the aquarium and I really like these small dwarfs with a big attitude.

The cichlids from the Pelvicachromis group are much more tolerant when it comes to water values and feeding, I do consider these cichlids a good beginner species. They are hardened, beautiful colored and eat almost anything. The Pelvicachromis pulcher is maybe one of the most easy to breed cichlids as well. If you have an adult couple they will reproduce, in a community tank, a special species tank or in a pond, some people like to breed them in their pond during summer. Actually some of the biggest and nicest colored Pelvicachromis pulcher were pond bred and raised. The only thing to keep in mind with these cichlids is that they are capable of redesigning your aquarium, they can make huge holes and are real little bulldozers. So if you have, or want to setup, a subtile planted tank, don’t add a couple of Pelvicachromis to your aquarium.

The last dwarf cichlid I want to mention is the Microgeophagus ramirezi, or Ram cichlid. Their behavior and care are roughly the same as the apistogramma’s but they are more tolerant when it comes to water values, and in my experience they are easier to keep in good condition. Unlike the apistos they have to be kept as a couple, not a harem but that’s the only breeding experience I have. I have tried several couples, have a couple in a breeding tank right now, but I have never even had a clutch of eggs. I know from other breeders that they are kind of hard to get going, but if they do they never stop.

Girth is winning out over your Resolution, and you are probably
more frustrated now than you were when you started!

Is there some master conspiracy that is keeping you from getting
in shape? Do the rules of energy in vs. energy out not apply to
you? Are you in a fat-loss vacuum where the normal laws of
weight loss don’t work?

Of course not. Yet, you still can’t lose the bodyfat, and it is
likely because you are simply confused.

If you are like most people, you have gotten fitness advice from
the radio, TV, friends, family members, magazines, maybe even a
Personal Trainer. Who had the most to gain from giving you
fitness advice?

The radio, TV, magazines, and even your trainer are all
interested in getting paid for handing out advice to you. Does
that make them the most qualified to help you? With the possible
exception of your personal trainer, no, it really doesn’t.

What about your friends and family? Let’s answer this question

you exercise - if you eat more than that during any one sitting,
some of it is going to be stored as bodyfat.

3.Exercise - at least 60 minutes a day. It doesn’t matter what
the magazines say, or what you hear on the “1-Second Abs”
commercial, or who tells you anything else. Exercise - at least
60 minutes a day. It bears repeating, so feel free at this time
to keep saying it out loud until you feel that you have it
memorized.

4.Believe. This final step is really the most important. Most
people have self-limiting beliefs. In a nutshell, that means
that no matter how much education or assistance that they
receive, they don’t BELIEVE that they can lose weight! Let’s
see…. how does that saying go? “Whether you think you can, or
think you can’t, you’re right!” Believe it can happen, because
it can. Then you will be only 3 short steps away from success.

Wow, what a revelation this article has been! In fewer words
than it takes to list the dozens of unhealthy circumstances and
afflictions related to being overweight, you have just been
