The latest craze - micro projector/s

Its not often a complete new type of technology hits the news - perhaps a new type of motor car engine, a new battery perhaps. But this month it seems the halo resolves around the micro projector. This tiny mini projector (this example I am looking at is from 3M) features all the sort of features you would expect to see in a normal projector, a pretty good contrast ratio, an average resolution and a good lamp life. Now of course the values are all a lot smaller than your typical everyday large corporate projector but this thing fits in your hand - its literally that small it will fit in the palm of your hand. Thats often why they get called pico projectors or pocket projectors - we cant wait to try out the next one!

The Finer Points of WAH Etiquette

Filed under: Life On The Web @ 3:36 pm

This article may only be reproduced in its entirety, including
the resource box and subscription information electronically or
in print. A courtesy copy of your publication would be nice, too!

The Finer Points of WAH Etiquette By Dan Reinhold

Business etiquette is vitally important in the corporate
world…and more so when you work at home. Here we at WAHumor
present a basic primer on the finer points of WAH etiquette.

Proper Telephone Etiquette:

When answering a WAH business phone, you must first and foremost
must answer it yourself. The most pleasing and eloquent message
on your machine proves useless when your three-year-old proudly
announces to your befuddled caller, “I MADE POTTY
TOOOOODAYYYY!!!”

An easily recognized signal to quiet any outstanding clamor is
most essential. A snap of the fingers, a ring of a bell or the
sharp report of an airhorn may prove adequate. If not, consult
your local Army/Navy surplus supplier for…ummm…unadvertised
specials.

It is also imperative that you answer in the correct manner -
it’s not so much what you say as how you say it. Although you
may have had a mad scrabble with several youngsters experiencing
Double Stuf Oreo-induced psychosis, upon answering your voice
must be perfectly calm and your breathing even. Asthma attacks
are very poorly received and could cost business.

In the event of severe noise, a tranquilizer dart gun is not
thought unseemly.

Entertaining Clients:

For the purpose of entertaining clients, always use a small.
secluded room away and well insulated from sounds emanating from
the main living area. Should such a room be unavailable, build a
shed.

Clearly mark the pathway to your chosen meeting place. Be sure
to provide the quickest possible access to respect your client’s
time and avoid children. Consider installation of an extra large
vacuum chute of the kind once used to transport mail in office
buildings.

Have suitable refreshments on hand to be certain that you will
not leave the room, thereby leaving said client alone and
unprotected. If something should spill during the meeting, clean
it up promptly and discard it in a large waste basket under your
desk. If your client requests something that is not on hand,
politely affirm that you have none - even water.

Unexpected Guests:

Use an intercom to ascertain the identity of the visitor, By
this method, you may avoid opening the door and the risk of
inadvertantly inviting them inside. It is crucial that you use
this approach at all times - even when the front door is open
and the visitor is plainly visible behind the screen door. Feign
blindness.

Provide an unwelcoming atmosphere at the entrance - no
coatracks, tables, chairs or ironing boards that could hold
coats. Should the visitor enter, assume the military “at ease”
stance with your hands clasped behind your back. Maintain this
position so that the visitor cannot hand their coat to you.

If guest still enters and wants to sit, prepare furniture by
placing large, angular rocks under the cushions. Hide old rotten
half-eaten bananas and unfinished yogurt cups (with children,
there is always a constant and abundant supply on hand) in
strategically chosen areas of the furniture to soil your
visitor’s clothing so that you may hurry them off to the dry
cleaner and resume work.

We at WAHumor hope that you will find this basic primer to be of
some use and always be mindful of the importance of proper
etiquette for the work at home lifestyle.

With two boys, a dog, a cat, a wife and a household to keep
together to boot, Dan Reinhold is the editor of WAHumor to hang
on to his sanity by showing how insane the work-at-home
community can be. Work at home? You deserve a laugh!

FTP Hosting for Architects

Filed under: Life On The Web @ 2:14 pm

Transferring layout and blueprints over the Internet

Problem in transferring large blueprints or layout over the Internet is a common problem for architects. As an architect you need a secure and efficient medium to send large digital files to clients and customers. It is observed that the process of sending files from one computer to another often terminates when the file size exceeds the limit. To overcome this hurdle you can break a single large file in multiple small files and send them through Email as an attachment. Clients or customers, who are receiving the files, will integrate the parts to get the original content of the large file.

For architects, the process is not efficient at all. Breaking the digital format of a blueprint or layout into several parts and then integrating them to get the original image may create problem for clients and customers. Also, it is not desirable that the client or customer can efficiently integrate the parts. Though it is true that business organizations are more familiar with Email services to communicate with the clients and customers however, Email is not the right medium to send large files.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) hosting service can be the right option for architects to transfer large digital layouts and blueprints on the World Wide Web, keeping the content unchanged. For an architect it is necessary to exchange information (text and/or image) with the customers and to maintain the security of business content. FTP hosting service not only ensures efficient transmission of large files over the Internet but also restricts unauthorized third party from accessing the information.

Why FTP for Architects?

Be it a large architect firm or a home business, File Transfer Protocol is a suitable communication protocol to transfer images and confidential content, irrespective of file size and type. Architects use FTP as an efficient mode for transferring large files:

  • Multimedia Presentation
  • Interior and Exterior Designs
  • Master Plan, Blueprint and Layout
  • Confidential Financial Data
  • Consultancy

FTP hosting services come with all the features, which are sufficient to transfer designs and images through a given network. An architect requires a suitable medium not only to exchange business communication with the clients but also to share information and designs in digital format.

Just think about a secure space in the server, allocated only for your business and only the authorized clients can access information from there. FTP hosting service provider will allocate necessary space in the server based on the requirement of your business process. Files are exchanged between the remote computers via this server.

Architects use FTP hosting service to develop 3D preview of the architecture for the client, to display audio and/or video presentation of a project and to exchange password protected plans and designs. The choice of using public or secured FTP server is based on the requirement. It is recommended to use private FTP hosting service to protect the privacy of the design and content from your rivals. Following the baseline of FTP hosting service it can be said that FTP hosting service will allow only FTP account holders to access the files from FTP server.

Features of FTP Hosting Service

Selection of a right hosting service matters for architects. Compared to a Web Server, FTP provides ultimate security and offers wide array of useful features for architects. Transferring designs or video presentations require secured medium to keep the privacy of the content. With Secured FTP Hosting Service you can transfer password-protected content and images in a compressed file format.

Following are some common features of FTP hosting services:

  • Large storage space in the server
  • FTP Software support to upload files, download files and manage FTP site
  • Private FTP account for users in the business system
  • Customized directories
  • Daily backups of data
  • Unlimited Bandwidth to transfer files
  • 24/7 Technical support

Sounds interesting? Register for FTP hosting service for your business from an authorized FTP hosting service provider. Initially you will get a trial period to familiarize with the process. Selection of FTP software depends upon the computer system that you are using in the business. For example, if you use Mac then it is recommended to go for Fetch FTP, otherwise, for general PC users recommended software are WS_FTP Pro or Cute FTP. FTP hosting service reduces the task of copying information on the disk to keep the backups. No need to use FedEx or other similar services to transfer files to your client. FTP hosting services save your time and money, and allow you to transfer or share information securely, protected by password.

The benefit of One-Way links from Web Directories

Filed under: Life On The Web @ 9:28 am

There are so many rules that search engines follow to determine
which site gets ranked number one for certain search words and
so on and so forth. However, one of these criteria includes
links so that is something you should focus on if you are
interested in increasing your traffic and rankings with the
search engines.

You may not know how to go about getting one way links to your
website, but it really is pretty easy. All you need to do is
start listing your website in different web directories and
before long you will have plenty of links pointing back to your
website. This is really important and something you want to
focus on because if you do not have links to your site then
getting ranked high in the search engines will be difficult.

Why Do you Need Links for the Search Engines?

Nobody knows for sure exactly what formula the many search
engines use to rank websites, but it is known that links to your
website make up a big percentage of where your website is
ranked. Obviously, the higher your website is ranked in the
search engines the more visitors will click on your site and the
more traffic you will have. Because of this the success of your
website just might depend on how many links you have pointing
back to your site on the Internet. Think of it as a popularity
contest and the website with the most links is the most popular
and wins a high ranking in the search engines as a result. So,
the higher your site ranks in the search engines the more
visitors your site will receive and the more money you will
make! One way links and search engines rankings have a great
cause and effect relationship so you should get started today.

Web directories are one of the best way to get the needed one
way links to your website and they offer many benefits to your
site other than helping your site get a high ranking with the
search engines. Also, web directories all you to submit your
site to a category and then a human edits your site information
in order to approve it for the directory. Many people use
directories to find information and websites as opposed to
search engines, so when you use a web directory or web
directories for linking purposes you will also be able to
attract traffic due to the individuals who visit the directory
looking for website.

When you use website directories to list your website or even
websites you will quickly realize an increase in your sites
rankings with the search engines as well as increased traffic
due to this as well as traffic from the directory. GO ahead and
increase your business and website traffic and start listing
your site with the many web directories today!

A Beginners Guide to Web Page Design

Filed under: Life On The Web @ 10:30 am

Designing your own successful web page can seem difficult and
nearly impossible if you do not do a little research first. The
reason you need to know the basics of web page design is because
the design of your website will actually influence whether or
not people continue to visit your site and ultimately, whether
they will buy from you or not. Obviously, a lot is riding on
your website design so it is worthwhile to take this seriously
and put some effort into doing it right the first time.

Design #1 Color Any important aspect of your design process
should include the use of color. Color affects people
psychologically and different colors have positive and negative
attributes or feelings they can evoke and men and women respond
to different colors more positively than others. So, figure out
your target audience, what you are selling, and what colors will
best help you persuade your target audience to stay on your web
page and to buy from you.

Design #2 Organization A design flaw many beginners run into is
organization. Your website must be well organized, and not just
to you, but to the average person who has never visited your
site before. It should be obvious where the information is and
how visitors can get to it without wading through a lot of other
links and information they are not interested in. Check out some
larger, more successful sites to see how they deal with
organization and just follow their lead.

Design #3 Too Much Text Be careful about writing too much text
and loading it to your website. Different types of writing is
more appropriate for the Internet and in general bullet points,
bold words, short paragraphs, and the like help break up a lot
of text and make it easier to read. If you have a huge block of
text on your web page, it is unlikely people will actually put
forth the effort to sit down and read it. Make it easy for
people to get the information.

Design #4 Too Many Graphics Too many graphics is another design
mistake by beginners. Graphics can be very useful, however if
you use too many graphics you cut out the text you can use which
is how search engines find your website and rank you in search
results. Don’t handicap yourself with the search engines by
using too many graphics.

Design #5 Focus Beginners often times do not have a clear focus
of their website before they start designing it and it appears
unorganized, unfocused, and the point of the web page is a bit
vague. Come up with a plan and outline the major points and
focus of your website design before you start.

Its all about the car insurance savings

Filed under: Life On The Web, Great Product Tips, Bloggers @ 5:07 am

Normally I don’t bother messing about when I get new car insurance I just go to the phone book or the net and find a good company and stick with their lowish quote. But since I was talking to dave about Car insurance groups in the uk I thougth maybe I’d give it a looksee. It turns out my car is in a mentally high uk car insurance group, largely due to its huge engine but also strangely because of the make - If I look up the car insurance group of it then I see that its a lot higher than say a nissan of the same capacity engine - think its just a more risky car - thats what people think. I may rethink my car now before I next get car insurance - might save me a few quid I suppose!

Online Senior Dating

With advances in medical technology and the general rise in standard of living of the past 50 years, life expectancy has increased substantially. Along with that extended lifespan, overall health has improved much later in life than ever before.

But one thing hasn’t changed - the desire for love and companionship at any age. Thanks to online dating services that goal is now easier than ever to satisfy. MySpace and similar social networking sites are geared mostly for the younger set. But, Internet dating sites for seniors are more popular than ever.

Even with all that life experience, though, the dating game can still be nerve wracking. Finding someone compatible hasn’t become automatic, just easier because of the easier access to a wider pool of prospects. And first dates are still just as anxiety-producing as ever. Sometimes more so, since many have more concerns about their looks later in life.

Senior Dating sites can help solve all those problems.

Providing a place for seniors to gather and communicate, they offer superb matching services and a dozen ways to connect. Group or individual chat forums, email relay and other now-standard tools make safe, anonymous communication easy. Until the point you choose not to have it remain anonymous!

Yahoo! Personals, Match.com, eHarmony, SeniorFriendFinder.com and a number of other sites offer literally millions of possible prospects for seniors seeking a friend, casual date or long-term relationship. They provide options for video, psychological profiling for expert matching and a number of other advanced tools. Sometimes, all you need is that simple tool you’ve always used - a basic, friendly message. The only thing that’s changed is that it’s electronic.

And just getting older doesn’t mean that you’ve somehow melted into a mold. You still have all the same personal likes and dislikes that make you unique. There are a number of subsets that cater to those tastes and interests. Whether it’s Christian Dating, or Swingers, Travel or Romance, or any of a dozen other categories, seniors can easily find a site that suits their needs.

Life experience gives everyone a large variety of things to talk about. But if you’ve been out of the dating arena for a few years, you may wonder if things have changed. Not really! Not fundamentally. Human nature is the same as it’s always been. What’s changed is the more relaxed way of communicating.

But that’s what Senior Dating sites, like so many others, are all about. You can connect easily and find out if what is communicated piques your interest. You’ll find it just as difficult, or just as easy, to find that special someone as anyone else would. But you have a big advantage: you know what you want.

Senior dating sites allow you to find it more easily than ever.

Setting up a Test Server on Your Own Computer

Filed under: Life On The Web @ 7:37 pm

This article will take a beginners look at this interesting
subject. It will give you the information that you need to know
most.

When you’re developing a website, you require to see it in
action on a truthful server, to see how it will work. While you
could upload your pages to your web multitude every time you
make a change, this quickly gets time-consuming and tiresome.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could have a little test server of
your own? Well, the server is nothing but a sample of software
so you can! Please note that, for the purposes of this article,
I will assume you’re with Windows as your operating system.

Installing an IIS analysis Server.

While with IIS isn’t recommended, a test server is very simple
to install. All you require to do is open ‘Add or subtract
Programs’ in Windows’ limit panel. All you require to do is
click Internet Information army (IIS), click OK, and you’re done.

If you feel that you havent learned anything new thus far, there
is a whole new realm of information in the rest of this article.

Of course, there are downsides to this. Many versions of
Windows don’t come with IIS, and there’s no way to invest it on
them Windows XP Professional, for example, comes with IIS, but
Windows XP Home does not. You might also want to believe that
installing IIS on your computer will often make it fewer secure.

Installing an Apache analysis Server.

Compared to installing IIS, installing Apache is hard Linux
distributions all have relatively simple ways of liability it,
but Windows wasn’t intended for it. To get Apache installed,
then, you’re available to require to have a little fight with
the system.

Note: If you want to skip all the next steps, you might believe
with an ‘easy installer’ type of Apache, such as XAMPP (for
Windows), which you can get at
www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html. The downside to
this approach is that you will be relying on them to impart new
releases, instead of being able to revise things yourself.

First of all, download Apache from
http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi. Make sure you download the
Windows Installer (MSI) version. You’ll find it easiest to make
the server run as a service, as this will make it run
automatically Apache will occur in your system tray (in the
bottom-right place of your screen).

Now, you require to find your Apache configuration file. In the
folder where you installed Apache, look for another folder named
‘conf’, and then a troop named ‘httpd.conf’. Open this troop and
look for a setting called DocumentRoot. You should change this
to direct to a folder on your hard drive, such as ‘c:/html’.

Now, you’ve got Apache, but that’s not typically much good on
its own. The odds are that you’ll want to invest PHP and MySQL
as well, so here’s how:

Download PHP from http://www.php.net/downloads.php. Again, go
for the installer. Once you’ve installed PHP, find its folder,
and rename the php.ini-dist troop there to php.ini. Find the
‘doc_root’ setting there, and set it to the same thing you set
Apache’s to.

Back in Apache’s httpd.conf, you should add these lines:

LoadModule php5_module “c:/php/php5apache2.dll”

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

PHPIniDir “c:/php”

If you didn’t invest PHP in c:\php, change the outline above to
mirror where you put it.

Now, installing MySQL isn’t as difficult, because it runs
independently of your Apache configuration. Download MySQL from
dev.mysql.com/downloads. Again, get the Windows installer
version. This installer has a lot of settings, but you’ll be
adequate if you just click Next through them to accept all the
defaults.

The only remaining stride is to allow MySQL encourage in PHP.
print libmysql.dll troop from c:\php to your Windows\System32
folder, and then open the php.ini troop you shaped before.
subtract the semicolon from the jump of the line that says
‘;extension=php_mysql.dll’, and collect the file.

Shut down Apache and resurrect it, and you’re done!

Visiting Your Server.

When they’ve installed a server on their computer, many people
question how they can access the server they just installed as
if they were visiting it over the web. The answer is simple:
just open your web browser, and go to this URL: http://localhost
(you can also use http://127.0.0.1). This special address means
‘the server on this computer’.

You’ll know if you installed Apache successfully because you’ll
see a page congratulating you. When you change your web pages,
just use your browser’s Refresh button to see the effect.

No matter which way you look at it, having a firm understanding
of this topic will benefit you, even if it is just slightly.

Don’t Let Spyware Sneak Up On You

Filed under: Life On The Web @ 9:44 pm

You decide to make an online purchase from a reputable Internet
site, so you add the items to your virtual shopping cart and
head to the checkout. You enter your billing address, your
credit card number, your card’s expiration date, even your
card’s 3-digit authorization number. Without even knowing it,
you could have provided an identity thief all of the information
he or she needs to rack up charges on your account if your
computer is infested with a type of spyware known as keyloggers.

Keylogger software keeps track of every letter, number, or
symbol you type. Then, the information is transferred from your
computer to a third-party. While keyloggers are bad enough, they
are only one of over a dozen types of spyware being used by
hackers and identity thieves today. What’s worse is that your
computer could be infected at this moment, and you may not even
realize it. In October 2004, America Online and the National
Cyber-Security Alliance conducted a survey about spyware. Eighty
percent of respondents found spyware on their computers and 89%
of those individuals never knew it was there.1

While some spyware is relatively harmless, other examples can
leave you vulnerable. For example, in August 2005 Sunbelt
Software discovered a spyware scheme using a program known as
CoolWebSearch which was allowing information from a user’s
computer to be sent to a central collection point without his or
her knowledge. The type of information collected included
Internet activity, credit card numbers, instant message
conversations, travel plans, and more. Thousands of people were
potential victims of identity theft thanks to this one program.

Now how do you stop yourself from being sucked into a spyware
scam? There are two answers to that question.

First, you should install anti-spyware software on your
computer. This type of software can detect spyware and can help
you eliminate it from your system. However, you need to realize
that even the best anti-spyware software is not full-proof
because identity thieves and hackers are always revising their
spyware so it won’t be detected. Keeping your anti-spyware
software up-to-date can help reduce this risk.

Second, you need to practice safer Internet behavior. For
example, only download programs from trustworthy web sites and
never agree to install anything on your computer unless you know
specifically what it is. Keeping your Internet Explorer updated
is also a good idea because security weaknesses in the browser
are often used by spyware to gain access to your personal online
activities.

The bad news is that spyware is only one method of stealing your
identity. If you want to learn how to protect yourself from
spyware and other methods or if you’ve been a victim of identity
theft and need to know what steps to take now, you need to read
Identity Theft: A Resource Guide from PCSecurityNews.com. The
ebook is available at http://www.PCSecurityNews.com?ht=xgaa06.
