3 Things to Think About when Decorating a Toddler’s Bedroom
Maybe your son has escaped form his crib one too many times. Or perhaps you need to get your daughter out of the crib to make way for the new baby. In any event, your baby is growing up and ready for their “big kid bedroom”. Here are three things to think about when making the big move:
Placing furniture near windows. Take into consideration the height of the windows and placement of furniture as you redecorate the bedroom. Babies turn into little climbers as they grow, and a small bookcase near an open window can lead to disaster. By all means open the window and let in the sweet spring breeze, but make sure that there is no way your child can access an open window, especially if their room is above the first floor.
Storage. Little people need storage that is low to the ground. To allow your child to learn to put away their toys starting at a young age, make sure the storage areas are easily accessible. Use two-foot high shelving with plastic bins that can easily be removed. I recommend putting labels on each bin with pictures and words so that your child understands the concept of categorizing toys to be put in certain bins. This will develop good organization skills as well as word recognition.
The bed. The question arises whether to get a twin bed, or to go for a toddler bed. This all depends on your budget and what will be most comfortable for your child. With the twin bed, although it is higher off the ground, you can attach bed rails that will give you peace of mind as your toddler tosses and turns at night. Also keep in mind that your little one may have trouble getting in and out of that big tall bed, so you may want to invest in a good sturdy step stool.
The toddler bed uses a standard crib mattress, has built-in rails, and is lower to the ground, so your little one may feel more secure. Also, toddler beds come in so many fun colors and styles, so if your child is hesitant about giving up the crib, he or she may get excited when they find that they get to sleep in a fire truck bed or a fairy princess bed. And don’t forget about all the awesome kids bedding available as well!
